FREQUENTLY ASKED

Wonder how things work at Amplified?

Here are questions we get asked the most.

  • We don't claim a specific genre — our musicians are versatile and our interests diverse. You could be playing Top 40s for one gig and Shoegaze for the next. Over the years we've played everything from J-Rock hits and heavy metal, to funk, pop, and even video game theme songs. If you feel strongly against a particular genre, we'll never force you to play it.

  • Of course! We know that staying in halls and RCs can be demanding on your time and commitments, but if you’re dead set on becoming a dedicated member of our musical community, we’ll welcome you with open arms.

  • Amplified operates as a musical collective. We’ll sort you into a band for your first internal gig (Amplifright) to initiate you into the club. After that, you’re free to jam or form bands with any of our members. We do encourage our members to mix around and play with different musicians to increase their musical exposure and improve their skills.

Commitment is gig-based: if you've agreed to a gig, expect band practice once or twice a week, self-organised around your schedules. We do also try to organize regular sharing sessions/lessons conducted by the seniors or fellow members!

  • Amplified is a completely student-run club, with the executive committee handling administrative matters. The committee comprises of a president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, logistics team and publicity team. Our ordinary members often help out in running gigs internally and externally, so expect to get a lot of hands-on experience!

We also have a large and very supportive pool of alumni, many of whom are seasoned musicians with years of experience, who provide constant support and training to the existing members.

    • Variety of musicians. There’s no commitment to a fixed band as you’ll form up on a per-gig basis. This means you get to learn from and play with way more people than you would in a dedicated band.

    • Performance opportunities. We all help source for gigs  (both internal and external), and in addition to in-house NUS shows, this adds up to more chances to take the stage for less effort.

    • Equipment and jamming studio convenience. Especially for those who stay on campus, it’s great to have a little jamming studio for practicing in that you don’t have to pay per hour to use! The club has its own amps, mics, monitors, mixer, and drums for our use. Or if you feel bored and want to listen to whoever’s inside then or just chill in an air-conditioned room, feel free to pop by!

  • We have auditions once a year in August, open to all current NUS students!
